Cane Toads

Cane toads are a prevalent best in North Queensland. Dogs and cats will hunt or lick the cane toad causing the toad to release the toxin from glands behind the neck that sticks to the gums and tongue of your pet.

Symptoms

Initially pets will drool, froth at the mouth and have dilated pupils. They may also start having small muscle tremors. If left untreated, your pet could have the following symptoms:

- profuse salivation, drooling and/or frothing from the mouth

- very red and slimy gums

- pawing at the mouth

- vomiting

- disorientation

- shivers and/or tremors

- muscle rigidity or spasms

- convulsions or seizures

- very rapid heart rate and/or heartbeat irregularities

- death

If a small amount has been ingested the pet’s mouth should be immediately washed out with a damp cloth, you should then rinse the cloth and repeat.

DO NOT put a hose down your pet’s throat, this can cause your pet to inhale large volumes of water which can cause other serious health issues.

If you are worried has ingested a large amount or has eaten a toad, please call the clinic and bring your pet down ASAP.
