Fireworks and Thunderstorms

Dogs have been known to jump through plate glass windows to escape loud noises, and easily jump over, or dig their way under fences that would normally contain them. To help your pet stay calm during events where fireworks of thunderstorms are involved:

  • Prepare early, keep an eye on radars for your area
  • Take your dog out for exercise before the storm and fireworks, this can help tire them out
  • Let your dog be with you, remain calm and perform your normal activities. Avoid fussing over your pet
  • Keep your dog indoors! This allows them to hide, be close to you and ensure they do not run away out of fear
  • You can distract your pet with food and games, however if they would prefer to hide, let them!
  • Do not punish your dog if they show signs of fear and distress.
  • Dogs who panic and try to run can choke themselves or cause injury, DO NOT tie them up
  • Make sure your dog is microchipped and that your contact details are up to
  • Dog-appeasing pheromones such as Adaptil may help reduce for dogs anxiety.
